Mainers and Pennsylvanians will give varying, conflicting and contrary accounts to the origins of the whoopie pie, the classic treat most often consisting of two generously portioned chocolate cake halves and a vanilla-cream filling. Whoopie pies today can be found in supermarkets, grocery stores and convenience stores through the northeast, on roadside stands throughout Amish country, and to the puzzlement of those from "away" when asked about elsewhere.

While many Mainers will stubbornly defend their genesis of the delicious treat, at least one whoopie pie history attributes whoopie pies as a special treat baked for generations by the Amish.
