The January 2008 issue of Down East Magazine names Cranberry Island Kitchens' the Best Whoopie Pie in Maine. According to Down East... "For a gourmet pumpkin whoopie pie filled with maple cream cheese that would wow even Martha Stewart (which it has, by the way), the Cranberry Island Kitchen in Cumberland takes the cake... or is it pie?" | ![]() |
Maine Homemade Cookies, Cakes, Desserts, Handmade Whoopie Pies
We started baking our homemade desserts about 20 years ago in a little cottage nestled off the coast of Maine, on Little Cranberry Island. At first, baking was just something to do on foggy days; then it became something we looked forward to, and planned for. One day, our kids dumped sandy seashells on the kitchen counter as we were putting extra cookie dough away, and voila... an idea was born!
Homemade desserts, simple pleasures
We always believed that simple pleasures are what Maine life is all about, and nowhere more than on a Maine island. Our unique and whimsical handmade cookies, cakes and whoopie pies are inspired by simple pleasures of island life, and our greatest wish is that every bite you take brings you back to another, simpler time.
Our cookies and desserts are Maine made, handmade, and baked the old fashioned way, with real, wholesome ingredients. We use only Kate's Homemade Butter, a local family owned producer in Old Orchard Beach. Dan the owner is as fanatical about his butter as we are about our cakes and cookies, and we love that! We use only local organic eggs from happy free-range chickens, pure Maine spring water, unbleached flour, Maine sea salt, as well as organic vanilla and other spices. Good ingredients just taste better, as we think you'll agree once you have a taste of one of our homemade whoopie pies, shortbread cookies or buttermilk cakes.
Cakes, cookies and whoopie pies inspired by the sea
We never outgrew the habit of collecting shells and sea glass, and for us it's a natural process to combine our homemade recipes with the magical forms we find at the shore. We thought the mussel shapes would add a little elegance to our Maine whoopie pies, and the clam is humble but delicious, just like the homemade buttermilk cake that has its shape. Our Sunshine Sand Dollars are rich, incredibly buttery shortbread cookies shaped like the sand dollars we like to collect on Gilley Beach. Of course we had to make something in a lobster shape, and what tastier way than in a delicious shortbread cookie?
Our charming, old-fashioned specialty gift tins make delicious, distinctive gifts for almost any occasion, and are the perfect Holiday Gift from Maine. We also offer a delectable line of Maine gourmet foods including blueberry and raspberry sauces and chutneys, organic cheeses, teas, and sea salt. Looking to host a Maine themed wedding? We have wedding favors, candles, glassware and the unconventionally amazing whoopie pie wedding cake.
Whether you give our handmade cookies and cakes as a gift, as your own exquisite dessert, we hope that with every bite, you will take time out of your busy life, relax, and enjoy your own simple pleasure from Down East Maine.
At Cranberry Island Kitchen, we are grateful to experience the beauty and community of a Maine island. We donate 10% of our profits to charitable organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, the international relief organization, and The Island Institute, an organization dedicated to preserving the ecology and communities of Maine's islands.
Yours,
Karen and Carol.
