We (Karen Haase and Carol Ford) had the pleasure of representing Cranberry Island Kitchen as featured guests on the Martha Stewart Show on September 13, 2007. We made our Gourmet Whoopie Pies on the show with Ms. Stewart, in addition to showcasing our other specialty Maine desserts: clam-shaped Island Buttermilk Cakes, shortbread cookies with a tangy lemon glaze shaped like a lobster, and rosemary, ginger, and original sand dollar shaped shortbread cookies.
Ms. Stewart tasted Cranberry Island Kitchen's whoopie pies earlier this summer in Northeast Harbor, Maine, near where Ms. Stewart has a home, and where Ms. Ford spends time on Little Cranberry Island. "Ms. Stewart was extremely gracious, and seemed to love everything," said Ford. "She asked questions and was genuinely interested in our products and how we make them."
Shortly thereafter, a producer from the show contacted us, asking us to appear. "It certainly was flattering to hear how much Martha liked our desserts," said Haase, "After all, she really has seen and tasted everything!"
As our loyal customers know, what sets our whoopie pies apart from the rest is both their shape (they're elegantly shaped like mussels) and the quality of our ingredients. We use only Kate's Homemade Butter, organic vanilla, local free range eggs, and the highest quality chocolate - and you can taste the difference!
While on the show we made an original version of our Gourmet Maine Whoopie Pies, we are even more adventurous in our Maine kitchen. We always start with our trademark moist chocolate cake and add liqueurs or other ingredients to fillings to create versions such as cointreau and orange zest, rum, Chambord, peppermint or espresso. Of course, there's really nothing like the original whoopie pie, with a rich creamy frosting flavored with organic vanilla.
